SUSPECT ARESTED:
The FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office arrest of 25-year-old Taron David Gilyard of Indiana, in connection with bank robberies in Roseville and Eagan. Gilyard is also suspected of robbing the TCF bank in Hastings, as well as other banks in the Twin Cities and Duluth. The suspect that robbed the bank left behind a sweatshirt and DNA was taken from that sweatshirt that linked Gilyard to the TCF robbery. The FBI is investigating the case with the Hastings Police Department and other police agencies for the possibility of other robberies that Gilyard may have been a part of.
HASTINGS POLICE REPORTS:
On July 13th, a resident on the 400 block of Hayes Drive was wakening in the early morning by their car alarm going off. The person went outside and noticed that one of the rear doors was open and the front right window was broken out. It appeared that nothing was missing. On July 7th a resident of the 1300 block of Eddy Street reported to police that someone siphoned approximately 26 gallons of gas from a pickup truck.
MEDALLION FOUND ON THE JULY 17TH:
Tobi Burr and Missy Schiller are $500 richer. They found this years Rivertown Days Medallion. They narrowed down the location of the medallion to the Sports Fields at the Hastings High School. The medallion was by the ball field that is by the tennis court under the “Home of the Raiders” sign.
TEACHER PLEADS GUILTY:
A former substitute teacher at Prescott Middle School has plead guilty and was sentenced to nine months in jail for a sexual relationship she had with a 13-year-old student. 39-year-old Anne Knopf pleaded guilty in Pierce County Court on Wednesday to repeated second-degree sexual assault of the same child. According to the criminal complaint, the boy would drive his parents’ vehicle to Knopf’s house about once a week for sexual encounters that went on for several weeks around January and February of 2007. Knopf was sentenced to nine month in jail, and five years of probation. Knopf is also prohibited from having contact with the victim, and must register as a sex offender. Knopf was a substitute teacher at Prescott Middle School for two years before she was fired last year.
WII OLYMPICS:
The entire world may have its eyes on the athletes in Beijing in August, but next week, the Olympic spirit comes to Hastings! The Pleasant Hill Library will host the Wii Olympic Challenge on Wednesday, July 30th, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is designed for teens, age 12 to 18 years old. Teens are invited to challenge their friends to popular interactive video competitions, including; bowling, tennis and cow racing. You won’t find that in Beijing! Teens must sign up in advance for the Olympic challenge. The event is free. There will be a special awards ceremony following the games.
PRESCOTT CITY COUNICL:
At the Prescott City Council meeting on Monday July 14th the council approved a resolution to allow Convenient Stores in the City of Prescott to have a Class “A” fermented malted beverage license. The council approved the resolution by a 4-2 vote. Erickson Oil Group, the company that owns Freedom Value Center applied for a Class “A” license. Freedom Value Center applied for the license to help boost sales do to the falling sales of cigarettes and the rising gas prices, people are not spending as much in the store. The Council approved Erickson Oil’s request by a 4-2 vote. Voting no on both request were Rob Dorrity and John McClelland.
SOCCER BLITZ:
The Hastings Area YMCA will be holding a 4 week youth Soccer Blitz beginning August 4th for youth in 2nd to 4th grade. Practices will be held on Tuesday and Thursday and games on Saturday mornings. Call 651-480-8887 or stop by the YMCA for more information.
CANIDADATES FOR 2008 ELECTION:
Tuesday July 15th was the deadline to file for local, state or federal candidacy. The Ward seats in the City of up for election. In ward 1 incumbent Anthony Alongi will be running unopposed. In Ward 2, there were 3 filings Joe Balsanek, Ron Seidl and Lance Twedt, in Ward 3, there were 4 filings Lara Christine Estes, Lisa Leifeld, Tony Nelson, and Ceil Strauss. In Ward 4 Dana Elling Schultz will be running unopposed. All seats for the Dakota county Commissioners will be up for election. In District 1 incumbent Joe Harris filed for his reelection along with Doug Riles Dean Birnstengel, and Craig Altendorfer. For State Representative 57B, incumbent Denny McNamara will be running against Rod Van Vleet. District 2 for US House of Representatives incumbent John Kline will be running against Steve Sarvi. The Primary elections will be held on September 9th to narrow the candidates down to two individuals in wards 2, 3, and Dakota County Commission District 1.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL:
St. John's United Church of Christ in Prescott will have their Annual Ice Cream Social on Sunday July 27th from 2 to 6 p.m. St. John's will be serving BBQ, Hot Dogs, pies and yes, even Ice Cream. St John's United Church of Christ is located on County Road QQ in Prescott, WI.
SAFETY CAMP 2008:
The Hastings Parks and Recreation Department is teaming up with the Hastings Police and Fire Departments, Community Education, and the YMCA offering kids in the community that will be entering the 3rd, 4th or 5th grades a Safety Camp. The all day event is packed with game activities dealing with fire, bike and environmental safety. This year’s safety camp will be held on July 29th from 8:00 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. at the Hastings, Middle School. The cost is $10 and will include snacks, lunch, a t-shirt, and prizes. Kids need to pre-register by July 18th by calling Jared Flewellen at 480-6181.
ARTISTS NEEDED FOR HASTINGS ART CRAWL:
The Hastings Arts Council is seeking artists to participate in the Hastings Arts Crawl on Saturday, September 27th, 2008. Local artists may give demonstrations, show and sell their art either in their own studios or at another Hastings location. A small fee will be charged to participate in this art crawl.
